Opening a captive bead ring (CBR) may seem complicated at first, but with the right tools and technique, it’s actually quite simple. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Get the right tools. You’ll need a pair of pliers (preferably needle-nose) and a small CBR opening tool.
Locate the seam in the CBR. Gently twist the two ends of the ring in opposite directions until you can see the small gap where the ring comes apart.
Use the pliers to grab one end of the ring and hold it steady.
Use the CBR opening tool to gently pry open the other end of the ring, just enough to pop out the bead or ball.
Remove the bead or ball and set it aside.
To close the CBR, use the pliers to bring the two ends of the ring together until they snap back into place.
Reinsert the bead or ball, making sure it’s securely in place.
With a little practice, opening and closing CBRs will become second nature. Just be sure to handle the jewelry gently and avoid twisting or bending the ring too much, as this can weaken the metal and cause the jewelry to break.
